One of the most common questions is which driving licence is required for a caravan. This article answers that question by examining the relevant Turkish legislation.

Two Main Types of Caravan

Caravans fall into two principal groups: O-category and M1-category vehicles. O-category vehicles are trailers, commonly referred to as touring or towed caravans, whereas M1-category vehicles are motor caravans.

O1 approval and O2 approval are explained in greater detail in our related articles.

Which Licence Is Required for O1 and O2 Caravans?

The vehicle types covered by each driving-licence category are defined by Türkiye's Road Traffic Regulation. Under the regulation, O1 caravans may be towed with a category B licence, while O2 caravans may be towed with a category BE licence.

The regulation defines category B as covering passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, together with attached combinations whose combined maximum authorised mass does not exceed 4,250 kg. Since the towing vehicle may have a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg, a category B licence is sufficient when towing a caravan with a maximum authorised mass of 750 kg.

The definition of category BE also states explicitly that the trailer's maximum authorised mass must not exceed 3,500 kg.

In summary, a category B licence is sufficient for an O1 caravan, while a category BE licence may be used for an O2 vehicle.

Which Licence Category Is Required for a Motor Caravan?

For registration purposes, motor caravans are classified as M1 special-purpose vehicles. M1 denotes a passenger vehicle, while bodywork code SA identifies a motor caravan. Under these definitions in Türkiye's Road Traffic Regulation, a category B driving licence may be used for a motor caravan.

As an M1-category vehicle, it is operated under the corresponding road-use requirements. Passenger-car speed limits may apply, and the inspection interval may extend to two years.

The article below explains the registration requirements that apply to caravans.
