Secure validation of a type-approval record for series production and market access

Type Approval Is a Valuable Technical and Commercial Asset

Type approval is more than the outcome of an application. It is a technical and commercial asset demonstrating that a manufacturer can produce a defined vehicle or component type in accordance with the applicable requirements.

As a vehicle or component manufacturer, you may be preparing products for domestic and international markets. You hold approvals and certificates, including type approval, and your operations are subject to audits.

Experienced manufacturers understand the long-term value of investment in approval and compliance. New market entrants often recognise that value only after confronting regulatory or production challenges. A well-maintained type approval can therefore become one of a manufacturer's most important technical and commercial assets.

How effectively does your organisation protect the value of its approval?

Why Type Approval Matters

As in other regulated sectors, customers in the automotive market expect manufacturers to demonstrate that their products hold the relevant approvals and certificates.

In the automotive sector, dealers, prospective distributors and end users expect evidence of quality-management, environmental and product-compliance credentials. These certifications are important, but they do not replace the type approval required by authorities and expected by the market for the vehicle, system or component concerned.

A vehicle must be covered by the relevant type approval before it can be registered. Components and systems must likewise hold the approvals required for their intended installation and use.

The key question is whether the approval holder fully understands the obligations and value attached to that approval.

Obtaining Type Approval Is Only the Beginning

Türkiye offers several routes and service providers for obtaining type approval. The application itself may therefore appear straightforward, but the quality of the technical preparation and the ability to maintain compliance after approval are what determine long-term success.

National and international approval bodies operate in Türkiye. Manufacturers can select specialist consultancy for preparation, competent technical services for testing and an approval authority suited to the project scope.

What happens after approval is equally important. The approval process establishes the authorised type; the manufacturer must then ensure that every vehicle or product continues to conform to that approval.

Components, assembly methods, declared workmanship and fasteners used within the approval scope must remain fully compliant. Changes must be notified to the approval authority where required, and their effect on testing and approval validity must be assessed.

The manufacturer remains responsible for every product placed on the market under its approval. Technical support should therefore continue after certification, with effective coordination between the manufacturer, technical service and approval authority whenever changes or compliance questions arise.

Compliance Must Be Maintained

The manufacturer is responsible for every stage of production and must be able to demonstrate conformity during scheduled or unannounced audits. Non-compliance may lead to administrative measures, so type approval cannot be treated as a one-time document. Investment planning, staffing and regulatory monitoring must support the approved production process. Compliance begins with the supply chain: approved and traceable inputs must be used through controlled manufacturing processes, supported by a robust quality system. Obtaining approval is only the starting point; maintaining conformity is the more demanding, continuous obligation.

The Value of the Right Technical Decisions

Sound technical decisions are central to the certification process. A product may be supported by strong engineering, research and development, and excellent performance, but those qualities alone do not establish regulatory compliance.

A weak homologation strategy can jeopardise otherwise sound product investment and may require costly redesign or retesting. Service proposals should therefore be compared across the full scope: regulatory analysis, documentation, testing, approval coordination and post-approval support. Significant price differences often reflect differences in that scope and should be examined carefully.

When proposals are assessed by scope, technical depth and post-approval support rather than initial price alone, the lowest quotation may prove more costly over time. The correct decision should be based on the full lifecycle of the approval.

Protect the Value of Your Approval

Once type approval and compliant production have been established, they must be actively maintained. Continued investment in quality, traceability and regulatory monitoring strengthens confidence in the manufacturer and supports its position in a competitive market.

Maintaining the approval therefore requires continued investment in people, processes, equipment and regulatory competence.
